What you are looking at

From Kusasenri, the wide grassy meadow and pond on the western side of the Aso volcano in Kumamoto, this JMA camera looks east toward Nakadake, about three kilometers away. Standing above eleven hundred meters, it frames the active first crater of Nakadake, where a white or gray plume often drifts away on the wind.

Asosan sits inside one of the world's largest calderas, a vast basin of farms and towns ringed by steep walls. Nakadake is its busy center: it erupted in October 2016, sending ash over a wide area, and again in October 2021. Between eruptions the crater holds a hot, turquoise acid lake, and visitors can walk to the rim when gas and alert conditions allow. Kusasenri itself is a favorite stop, with horses grazing on the meadow in good weather and snow on the slopes in winter.

JMA rates Asosan on its five-level Volcanic Alert Level. Level 2 already closes the area around the crater, so the rim walk is often shut even when the plume looks calm. Check JMA's current level, and local access news, before going.
