What you are looking at
This Japan Meteorological Agency camera watches Atosanupuri, the steaming lava dome in eastern Hokkaido that locals call Iozan, or Sulfur Mountain. It stands near the southern part of Lake Kussharo, roughly twelve kilometers southwest of the dome, so the picture is a wide, low view across the floor of the huge Kussharo caldera toward the bare, yellow-streaked rock where vents hiss beside the road to Kawayu Onsen.
Atosanupuri is one of a cluster of young domes that grew inside the caldera, and sulfur was mined from its slopes until 1963. Its fumaroles are still active, and the most recent eruption, a few hundred years ago, was a steam explosion rather than a lava outpouring. On calm, cold mornings the plumes stand up clearly; in summer haze or snow they can vanish from view.
JMA rates volcanoes like this one on a five-step Volcanic Alert Level scale, from Level 1, a reminder that the volcano is active, up to Level 5, evacuation. Check JMA's current alert level before visiting the fumarole area.
