What you are looking at
Station 41002, known as South Hatteras, rides the open Atlantic about 225 nautical miles south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The water under it is roughly 3,666 meters deep, more than two miles, so this 3-meter foam buoy is far from any coastline and no land appears in its pictures.
The BuoyCAM adds a strip of several photos taken in different directions around the hull, generally once an hour while it is light. Expect wide ocean and big sky, with a horizon that tilts as the buoy rolls and, now and then, a lens spotted with spray or salt.
For forecasters this is an early look at weather heading for the Carolinas. The buoy reports wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea temperature, and wave height and period, all of which feed National Weather Service marine forecasts. In the June to November hurricane season it can sit near passing storms; in winter, cold fronts and developing coastal lows bring gray skies and steep, wind-driven seas.
