What you are looking at
Edisto, station 41004, is moored about 41 nautical miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, on the continental shelf in roughly 35 meters of water (around 115 feet). The name comes from Edisto Island on the nearby coast, though at this distance the shoreline is normally below the horizon.
Its camera sends a panoramic strip of photos looking out in several directions, generally hourly in daylight. What you get is the working sea off the Lowcountry: chop or long swell, clouds building over the Gulf Stream side in summer, and now and then a passing ship. The buoy pitches with the waves, so a tilted horizon or a few drops on the lens are normal.
Captains running out of Charleston for offshore fishing check this station before committing to the trip, and surfers on the South Carolina beaches watch its wave height and period. It also logs wind, gusts, pressure, and air and water temperature for National Weather Service forecasts. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and the June to November hurricane season; winter brings fronts with sharp northeast winds.
