What you are looking at

Twenty nautical miles east of Cape Canaveral, Florida, station 41009 floats over about 42 meters of water on the Space Coast shelf. It is a 3-meter discus buoy, a round, flat-hulled platform owned and maintained by NOAA's National Data Buoy Center.

The BuoyCAM takes a set of photos in different directions, usually every hour during daylight, and the pictures are joined into one wide strip. From this distance the low Florida coast may or may not show; most frames are sea and sky, tilted a little whenever the buoy rolls.

This spot matters to a lot of people. Boaters leaving Port Canaveral use its wind and wave readings, anglers heading offshore check the sea state, surfers from Cocoa Beach to Sebastian Inlet look at swell height and period, and the buoy's pressure and temperature data feed National Weather Service marine forecasts. Winter cold fronts and stubborn northeast winds can stack up rough seas, while summer usually means calmer mornings, towering afternoon thunderstorms and, from June through November, the watch for tropical storms.
