What you are looking at
Canaveral East, station 41010, sits about 120 nautical miles east of Cape Canaveral, far out over the Blake Plateau in roughly 903 meters of water. It carries a 2.1-meter ionomer foam hull, smaller than the classic 3-meter buoys but built for the same open-ocean work.
The camera captures several views around the buoy, generally hourly while it is light, and lines them up side by side. There is no land out here, only blue Atlantic water, passing clouds and the occasional sweep of rain. Because the hull moves with every wave, horizons lean and spray sometimes lands on a lens.
Weather systems approaching Florida and the Southeast often pass this point first, which makes its readings of wind, gusts, air pressure, air and sea temperature, wave height and wave period valuable to National Weather Service forecasters. Sailors crossing toward the Bahamas and offshore anglers find it useful too. Hurricane season runs from June through November; in the cooler months, northeast swell and the wake of passing fronts are more common sights.
