What you are looking at
Diamond Shoals is one of the most feared stretches of the US coast, and station 41025 watches the waters just off it, southeast of Cape Hatteras on the North Carolina Outer Banks. The 3-meter foam buoy is moored in about 61 meters of water, beyond the shifting sand ridges that earned this area the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic.
Its BuoyCAM takes a round of photos in several directions, generally every hour in daylight, joined into one panoramic strip. Land is usually not in sight; expect open water, quick-changing skies and a horizon that tips with the sea.
Near Hatteras, warm Gulf Stream water meets cooler water from the north, and weather can turn quickly. That is why mariners rounding the cape, charter captains, and Outer Banks surfers keep an eye on this buoy's wave height and period, wind, gusts, pressure, and air and water temperatures, which also feed National Weather Service warnings. Winter nor'easters and fall storms bring big, confused seas, and in the June to November hurricane season tropical systems often track close by.
