What you are looking at

Station 41041, North Equatorial Two, is about as remote as these buoys get: some 890 nautical miles east of Martinique, in the middle of the tropical Atlantic between Africa and the Caribbean. The ocean there is about 3,506 meters deep, and the station uses a 2.1-meter ionomer foam hull.

Hourly in daylight, as a rule, its camera shoots a series of views around the buoy and stitches them into one long strip. You will see trade-wind clouds, blue water and whitecaps, with no land or coastline anywhere. Salt and spray on a lens, and a horizon that swings as the buoy rocks, come with life this far out.

Few ships pass here and few other instruments report from these waters, so its wind, gust, pressure, temperature and wave readings are especially valued by National Weather Service forecasters. Tropical waves rolling off Africa cross this area in summer and early fall, and some grow into storms during the June to November hurricane season. Between those events, the northeast trades usually set the scene: steady breeze, moderate seas and fair-weather cumulus.
