What you are looking at

About 170 nautical miles north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, station 41043 floats over very deep Atlantic water, about 5,286 meters. The 3-meter foam buoy is far beyond sight of the island, so the camera shows only sea and sky.

Its pictures come as a wide strip of several photos taken in different directions, generally each hour during daylight. Look for trade-wind cumulus, deep blue ocean and, on rougher days, whitecaps and spray. The buoy moves constantly, so a slanted horizon is part of the view.

Swell headed for the north coast of Puerto Rico passes this point on its way in, which is why surfers there follow its wave height and period, especially in winter when storms far to the north send long-period groundswell south. Mariners sailing between the island and the US East Coast use its wind, gust and pressure reports, and all of its data, including air and water temperature, support National Weather Service forecasts. From June through November it also gives an early read on tropical storms approaching the islands.
