What you are looking at

Northeast of the Leeward Islands, roughly 330 nautical miles from St. Martin, station 41044 holds its place in about 5,419 meters of water. It is a 3-meter discus buoy, a wide, saucer-like hull that rides on top of the waves, deep in open Atlantic water with no land within view.

The BuoyCAM photographs the sea in different directions, generally hourly while there is daylight, and the shots are lined up in one panoramic strip. Scenes range from glassy calms under scattered cloud to long, rolling swell beneath dark squalls. Sometimes salt or spray blurs part of a frame.

Storms heading for the northeastern Caribbean, and those curving north toward Bermuda, often pass near here, so the buoy's readings of wind, gusts, air pressure, sea and air temperature, and wave height and period are watched closely by National Weather Service and hurricane forecasters during the June to November season. Sailors on passage between the Caribbean and North America check it too. In winter, northerly swell from distant Atlantic storms can roll through under otherwise fair, breezy trade-wind skies.
