What you are looking at
Station 41046, East Bahamas, lies about 335 nautical miles east of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, out in open Atlantic water some 5,553 meters deep. That is far beyond the shallow Bahamian banks, and its 3-meter foam buoy sees no land at all.
What the camera offers is a panorama of photos looking in several directions around the hull, generally taken every hour by day. Expect blue-water trade-wind scenery: rows of cumulus, breaking whitecaps, sometimes a passing rain shower. Because the buoy rolls and pitches, horizons tilt and spray may fleck a lens.
Hurricanes moving toward the Bahamas, Florida or the US East Coast often cross this part of the ocean, so between June and November its measurements are an important early signal. The buoy reports wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperatures, and wave height and period to the National Weather Service. Outside storm season, cruising sailors and offshore passage-makers use it to judge trade winds and swell, which in winter often arrives from storms far to the north.
