What you are looking at

Northeast Bahamas, station 41047, is a 3-meter foam buoy about 350 nautical miles east-northeast of Nassau, moored in roughly 5,328 meters of water. It sits in the open Atlantic between the Bahamas and Bermuda, far from any shore.

Daylight photos are generally taken hourly by its BuoyCAM, several at a time in different directions, and joined into a single wide image. Ocean and sky fill every frame: sometimes calm water and bright tropical light, sometimes gray sky and wind-blown seas. A leaning horizon and the odd salt-spotted lens are normal for a camera on a moving buoy.

Hurricanes that turn north out of the tropics often pass not far from this location, and swell born near here can reach the beaches of Florida and the Carolinas. National Weather Service forecasters use its wind, gust, pressure, temperature, and wave height and period data, and offshore sailors check it before crossing. From June through November, tropical weather is the main story; in winter, cold fronts sweeping off the US mainland bring sharp wind shifts and choppy seas.
