What you are looking at
Station 42036, West Tampa, is a 3-meter discus buoy about 112 nautical miles west-northwest of Tampa, Florida, moored over the broad West Florida Shelf in roughly 53 meters of water. That puts it in the eastern Gulf, out of sight of the coast.
Its BuoyCAM takes several daylight photos in different directions, generally once each hour, and joins them into one wide view. Clear green-blue shelf water, towering summer clouds and the occasional fishing boat are typical. As with every buoy camera, the picture moves with the sea, and salt can blur part of a frame.
Offshore anglers heading for the reefs and ledges of the eastern Gulf check this station before leaving port, and boaters crossing between the Florida Panhandle and the peninsula use it too. It records wind, gusts, air pressure, air and sea temperature, and wave height and period for National Weather Service marine forecasts. Summer days often bring light winds and afternoon storms; hurricane season runs June through November, and winter fronts bring brisk north winds and choppy seas.
