What you are looking at
About 115 nautical miles south-southeast of Pensacola, Florida, station 42039 floats near the edge of the continental shelf in roughly 297 meters of water. The Pensacola buoy uses a 2.1-meter ionomer foam hull and is far enough offshore that land is not part of the view.
Pictures arrive as a band of photos looking in several directions, generally shot hourly in daylight. Expect a wide Gulf horizon, sometimes tilted by the swell, with summer haze, winter overcast or bright clear skies after a front has passed. Spray may sometimes speckle a lens.
This station watches the northeastern Gulf, open water between the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and the deeper Gulf to the south. Forecasters use its wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperatures, and wave height and period in marine forecasts and warnings, while charter fleets out of Pensacola, Destin and Panama City and Gulf Coast surfers watch it for sea state and swell. Between June and November, storms moving toward the Panhandle often cross this area.
