What you are looking at
In the Yucatan Basin of the western Caribbean, about 120 nautical miles east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, station 42056 is moored over roughly 4,578 meters of water. The 3-meter foam buoy is well offshore from the Riviera Maya, and its camera shows open sea rather than coastline.
Several photos are taken around the buoy, generally each daylight hour, and put together into one wide picture. On a typical day that means deep Caribbean blue, puffy trade-wind clouds and a light chop; on stormy days, dark skies and whitecaps. Expect a tilting horizon, since the camera rides with the waves.
Storms moving through the western Caribbean toward the Yucatan Peninsula, Cuba or the Gulf often pass near here, so in the June to November hurricane season its data on wind, gusts, air pressure and waves are watched closely by the National Weather Service and hurricane specialists. It also records air and sea temperatures and wave period. Sailors and cruise traffic moving between Mexico, Belize, Cuba and Jamaica benefit from forecasts that use it, especially when winter cold fronts reach this far south.
