What you are looking at

Station 42057, Western Caribbean, sits about 195 nautical miles west-southwest of Negril, Jamaica, moored on the Nicaraguan Rise in about 412 meters of water. It is a 3-meter discus buoy, with a wide, flat hull that rides on the swell, and it is too far from land for any coast to show.

The BuoyCAM's view is a strip of several photos facing different directions, generally refreshed hourly during daylight. Trade-wind cumulus, warm blue water and steady seas are the usual scene, with squalls and heavier skies when a tropical wave goes by. Spray or salt can sometimes cloud part of the picture.

This area sits on a common path for tropical storms moving west across the Caribbean toward Central America, the Yucatan or the Gulf, and the buoy's readings of wind speed, gusts, pressure, air and sea temperature, and wave height and period help National Weather Service forecasters follow them from June through November. Vessels sailing between Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Central America also rely on forecasts informed by it. In winter, cold fronts occasionally reach this far south, bringing northerly wind and swell.
