What you are looking at
Some 210 nautical miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, station 42058 floats in the open central Caribbean over water about 3,953 meters deep. The 3-meter foam buoy lies roughly midway between Jamaica and the coast of South America, with no land in sight.
Its camera takes several photos in different directions, generally every hour in the daylight, and lines them up in one panoramic strip. Strong sunshine, whitecaps and trade-wind clouds are common, and on gusty days spray may land on a lens. The horizon tilts with each roll of the buoy.
The central Caribbean is often one of the windiest parts of the sea, as the trades blow strongly toward the Colombian coast, especially in winter and again in early summer. That makes this buoy's wind, gust and wave height and period readings important for ships on the busy routes to and from the Panama Canal. It also records air pressure and air and sea temperatures for National Weather Service forecasts. From June through November, hurricanes crossing the Caribbean can pass near it.
