What you are looking at
Caribbean Valley, station 42060, lies about 63 nautical miles west-southwest of the island of Montserrat, on the Caribbean side of the Leeward Islands, in roughly 1,556 meters of water. The 3-meter foam buoy is far enough out that the islands are unlikely to show in its pictures.
Photos are generally taken hourly during daylight in several directions, then set side by side in a wide strip. Expect steady trade-wind seas, bright tropical light, and sometimes the dark curtain of a passing rain squall. The buoy moves with the water, so the horizon tilts and a lens may carry spray.
Storms entering the Caribbean through the Leeward Islands often pass this area, so the buoy is an important early observation for the islands to the west during the June to November hurricane season. It reports wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period to the National Weather Service. Yachts sailing the island chain and inter-island ferries benefit from forecasts that draw on it, and in winter it shows the long swells sent south by distant North Atlantic storms.
