Station 44007 is a 3-meter discus buoy about 12 nautical miles southeast of Portland, Maine, at the outer approaches to Casco Bay in roughly 49 meters of water. It is close enough to shore that the Maine coast or offshore islands may or may not appear in some of its photos, depending on visibility.
The BuoyCAM shoots several directions around the buoy, generally hourly during daylight, and joins them into one strip. In summer, the Gulf of Maine is known for thick fog that can turn the whole view white for days; in fall and winter, crisp blue skies alternate with low clouds and steep, wind-driven seas. Spray or ice on a lens, and a tilted horizon, are to be expected.
Lobster boats, fishing vessels, ferries and ships bound for Portland all depend on forecasts that use this station's wind, gust, pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. Southern Maine surfers watch it too. Winter nor'easters can pile up big seas and heavy snow along this coast, and the buoy is one of the first places those conditions show up.
