What you are looking at
Moored about 54 nautical miles southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, station 44008 sits over open ocean water roughly 73 meters deep, beyond the Nantucket Shoals. This 3-meter discus buoy is too far offshore for land to be in its view.
The BuoyCAM photographs the surroundings, generally once an hour by daylight, and their images are joined into a wide panorama. Fog is a frequent visitor here, especially in late spring and summer, when warm, moist air drifts over cool water; on clear days, you may see gray-green Atlantic swell beneath a big northern sky. The buoy's motion leans the horizon, and salt sometimes clouds a lens.
Shipping lanes heading for Boston and New York and fishing fleets bound for the offshore banks pass through this region, and forecasts for them use the buoy's measurements of wind, gusts, air pressure, air and sea temperature, and wave height and period. Surfers on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard also watch it. Nor'easters and strong winter storms bring large seas, and late-season hurricanes moving up the coast sometimes track near here.
