What you are looking at
Sixteen nautical miles east of Boston, station 44013 floats in Massachusetts Bay over about 64.6 meters of water, on the approach to Boston Harbor. It uses a 2.1-meter ionomer foam hull, and at this distance the coastline may or may not appear in some of the camera's shots.
As a rule, the camera shoots several directions every daylight hour and lines the photos up in one wide strip. You might see sailboats and ferries on a summer afternoon, a tanker or container ship heading to port, or whitecaps and spray under a wintry sky. The view moves as the buoy rocks, so horizons are rarely level.
Boaters, ferry captains, commercial fishermen and whale-watch operators heading out toward Stellwagen Bank use forecasts built in part from this buoy's wind, gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, and the National Weather Service relies on it for Massachusetts Bay. Nor'easters can drive large waves toward the shore here, and summer brings sea breezes and patches of fog.
