What you are looking at
Station 44014 rides the Atlantic 64 nautical miles east of Virginia Beach, Virginia, well out over the continental shelf in water about 49 meters (roughly 160 feet) deep. No coastline is in reach from here, so its BuoyCAM shows open ocean and sky: a wide strip of several photos, each looking a different way around the 2.1-meter foam hull, generally taken hourly in daylight.
The National Data Buoy Center keeps this buoy on station to report wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period. Those readings feed National Weather Service marine forecasts for the busy waters off the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, where commercial ships, offshore anglers chasing tuna and billfish, and recreational boaters all watch the outer forecast before heading out.
Expect calm, hazy summer mornings, building thunderheads on hot afternoons, and the long swells and dark skies of hurricane season, which runs June through November. In the colder months nor'easters can stack up steep, gray seas. Because the buoy pitches with every wave, the horizon tilts and a little salt spray on a lens is normal.
