What you are looking at

Buoy 44020 sits in Nantucket Sound, the shallow stretch of water between Cape Cod's south shore and the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The water here is only about 16.5 meters (around 54 feet) deep. Its camera takes a strip of photos looking in several directions, generally once an hour in daylight, so on a clear day the low shorelines of the Cape or the islands may or may not appear on the horizon; mostly you will see the sound itself and a lot of sky.

This is one of the most traveled pieces of water in New England. Ferries run across the sound to Nantucket and the Vineyard, and sailors, fishing boats and summer boaters cross it every day. The 3-meter foam buoy, operated by the National Data Buoy Center, reports wind, gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period for National Weather Service forecasts.

Summer brings soft fog banks and busy southwest sea breezes. Fall and winter can turn the sound short and choppy when nor'easters blow through, and a winter photo may show dark, wind-streaked water under heavy cloud.
