What you are looking at
Twenty nautical miles southeast of Jonesport, Maine, station 44027 floats in the eastern Gulf of Maine, over water about 188 meters (roughly 617 feet) deep. This is Downeast country, not far from the approaches to the Bay of Fundy. The BuoyCAM aboard the 3-meter foam buoy sends a wide panorama made of several photos, generally hourly during daylight, showing open water and sky rather than the rocky coast.
Lobstermen, scallopers, coastal freighters and sailors heading along the Maine coast rely on the numbers this buoy sends: wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. The National Data Buoy Center maintains it, and the readings flow into National Weather Service marine forecasts and warnings for these cold, tidal waters.
Summer is the season of thick fog, when a photo can be nothing but soft gray. Winter is a different world: nor'easters drive big seas and snow across the gulf, and freezing spray can coat the hull and lenses. On bright fall days the water turns a deep, clean blue.
