What you are looking at

At the entrance to New York Harbor, 15 nautical miles southeast of Breezy Point in Queens, buoy 44065 keeps watch over the open water of the New York Bight. It floats in about 26 meters (some 85 feet) of water near the approaches that container ships, tankers and cruise liners use on their way into the port. Its camera captures a strip of photos in several directions, generally hourly during daylight; land is far enough off that it may or may not show.

The National Data Buoy Center keeps this 3-meter foam buoy reporting wind, gusts, air pressure, air and sea temperature, and wave height and period. Harbor pilots, ship operators, charter fishing boats and surfers along the Long Island and New Jersey beaches all have reason to check it, and National Weather Service forecasters use the data for marine forecasts and warnings.

In summer you may catch hazy skies and gentle swell, or afternoon storms moving off the land. Late summer and fall can deliver long tropical swells during hurricane season, while winter nor'easters push steep, cold seas toward the city's shores.
