What you are looking at
Seventy nautical miles northeast of Marquette, Michigan, station 45004 floats over the deep eastern half of Lake Superior, in roughly 237 meters (about 778 feet) of water. Nothing but the lake surrounds it. The BuoyCAM sends a wide strip of photos looking in several directions, generally hourly in daylight, and the views are of open water, waves and big northern skies.
The 2.3-meter foam discus buoy belongs to the National Data Buoy Center and measures wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. Ship traffic bound for the locks at Sault Ste. Marie crosses this side of the lake, and the readings give mariners and National Weather Service forecasters a direct look at conditions far from any shoreline station.
The buoy only works part of the year: it is removed before the lake ices over and set out again each spring. Summer days can be glassy and cold-looking, sometimes wrapped in fog. Autumn is when Superior shows its teeth, with northwest gales piling up long, steep waves under heavy cloud and early snow squalls.
