What you are looking at
Station 45006 lies in western Lake Superior, 30 nautical miles northeast of Outer Island, the outermost of Wisconsin's Apostle Islands. The water is about 194.5 meters (some 638 feet) deep. The islands are well astern, so the hourly daylight photo strip from this buoy shows open lake and sky; land is unlikely to appear.
Lake freighters bound to and from western Superior ports such as Duluth and Superior pass through these waters, and kayakers, sailors and anglers around the Apostles watch the lake forecast closely. The National Data Buoy Center maintains this 2.3-meter foam discus buoy, which reports wind and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period for National Weather Service marine forecasts.
Each fall the buoy is hauled out ahead of winter ice and redeployed in spring, so the camera is silent through winter. Midsummer can bring calm, deep blue water and long evenings of light. September through November brings a sharper mood: strong northeast or northwest winds, cold rain, whitecaps to the horizon and snow on the wind late in the season.
