What you are looking at

Buoy 45012 is in eastern Lake Ontario, about 20 nautical miles north-northeast of Rochester, New York. The lake here is roughly 143 meters (around 470 feet) deep. Its camera takes a strip of photos looking in several directions, generally hourly in daylight, and from this far out the views are mostly open water and sky, with the New York shore usually out of sight.

Boaters crossing toward Canada, salmon and trout anglers, and commercial traffic heading for the St. Lawrence all benefit from what this National Data Buoy Center buoy reports: wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. National Weather Service forecasters use the data for marine forecasts on the lake.

The 2.3-meter foam discus buoy is seasonal, taken out before winter ice and set back in spring, so expect a winter gap in photos. Summer brings warm haze and afternoon storms. In late fall, cold air pouring over the still-warm lake builds the bands of lake-effect snow that bury the Tug Hill country east of the lake, and the photos can turn gray, streaky and wild.
