What you are looking at

Far out in the western Gulf of Alaska, station 46001 floats 175 nautical miles southeast of Kodiak Island over abyssal water some 4,123 meters (roughly 13,500 feet) deep. This is truly open ocean. Its camera assembles a wide strip of photos from several directions, generally hourly during daylight, showing North Pacific sea and sky with no land anywhere near.

Fishing vessels, cargo ships on the great-circle routes, and forecasters at the National Weather Service in Alaska watch this 3-meter foam buoy closely. Maintained by the National Data Buoy Center, it reports wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. Its pressure readings are especially useful for tracking the deep storms that spin up in the gulf.

Winter is the stormy season, when powerful lows bring gale and storm-force winds, towering seas and heavy spray; daylight is short then, so photos are few. Summer is milder but often gray, with low cloud and fog over cold water. Since the buoy rolls with the swell, the horizon rarely sits level.
