What you are looking at
Three hundred nautical miles west of Aberdeen, Washington, buoy 46005 holds its place over about 2,811 meters (roughly 9,220 feet) of North Pacific water. It is an offshore sentinel: no coastline is visible, and the camera's hourly daylight panorama shows open sea in several directions around the 3-meter foam hull.
Because it sits so far upwind of the Pacific Northwest, this buoy gives early notice of storms and swell bound for Washington and northern Oregon. The National Data Buoy Center keeps it reporting wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. The National Weather Service uses the readings in marine forecasts, and mariners, crabbers, ships heading for the Strait of Juan de Fuca and coastal surfers all follow it.
From late fall through early spring, storm systems roll through one after another, bringing gales, very large seas and rain. Pictures from this time of year often look dark and churned. Summer brings longer days, lighter winds and calmer, often overcast seas, with sunshine breaking through between banks of marine cloud.
