What you are looking at
Station 46006, called Southeast Papa, floats about 600 nautical miles west of Eureka, California, over some 4,335 meters (nearly 14,200 feet) of water. Its name nods to the historic Ocean Station Papa weather post that lay far to the northwest. Out here there is no land at all, and the camera's strip of hourly daylight photos shows only the open Pacific.
This is one of the most remote buoys in the National Data Buoy Center network. The 3-meter foam buoy reports wind and gusts, air pressure, air and sea temperature, and wave height and period, giving forecasters a rare direct measurement in the middle of the northeast Pacific. Ships crossing to and from West Coast ports, National Weather Service marine forecasters and surf forecasters watching for incoming swell all find it useful.
Winter storm tracks pass nearby, and photos can show huge rolling seas, low cloud and rain squalls. Summer tends to be quieter under the influence of the Pacific high, with steady winds, scattered cloud and a deep blue ocean. The buoy moves with every swell, so tilted horizons are part of the view.
