What you are looking at

Forty-eight nautical miles northwest of San Francisco, station 46013 floats off Bodega Bay on the Sonoma coast, in about 128 meters (roughly 421 feet) of water. The coast lies to the east, and from here the shoreline may or may not appear in the camera's strip of photos, generally taken hourly in daylight. Most frames show open ocean and sky.

Crab and salmon boats out of Bodega Bay, sailors heading up and down the coast, and surfers in Sonoma and Marin counties all follow this buoy. Owned and maintained by the National Data Buoy Center, the 3-meter discus buoy reports wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. The data help the National Weather Service issue marine forecasts and small craft advisories for this windy stretch of coast.

Spring winds from the northwest drive strong upwelling, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. Summer often means thick fog banks that can fill the frame with gray. In winter, Pacific storms deliver big swells and rain, while crisp days after a front can show sparkling blue water.
