What you are looking at
Station 46014 floats 19 nautical miles north of Point Arena on California's Mendocino coast, over water about 335 meters (around 1,100 feet) deep. The rugged shore lies to the east and may or may not be visible; the camera's hourly daylight strip of photos mostly shows open Pacific and sky in several directions.
This is a lonely, exposed stretch of coast with few harbors, so the readings from this 3-meter discus buoy matter to commercial fishers out of Noyo Harbor and Point Arena, to vessels running the coast, and to National Weather Service forecasters. Its sensors log wind speed, gusts and direction, barometric pressure, air and water temperature, and the height and period of the waves, and the National Data Buoy Center keeps them running.
Northwest winds dominate from spring through summer, raising choppy seas and pulling cold water up from below, and summer fog often hugs the coast. Winter storms bring rain, southerly gales and heavy swell that pound the headlands. Between fronts the sky can clear to a brilliant blue over a dark, restless ocean.
