What you are looking at
Buoy 46015 sits 15 nautical miles west of Port Orford on Oregon's southern coast, close to Cape Blanco, in water roughly 446 meters (about 1,463 feet) deep. It is near enough that the coastal hills may or may not show on the horizon of the camera's photo strip, which is generally taken hourly in daylight and looks in several directions around the 3-meter discus hull.
Fishing boats out of Port Orford's small open harbor, crabbers, coastal freighters and Oregon surfers all keep a watch on this spot. The National Data Buoy Center maintains the buoy, which reports wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period; the National Weather Service uses the data in marine forecasts and warnings for the southern Oregon coast.
Summer often brings strong northerly winds off Cape Blanco, steep wind waves and cold, upwelled water, sometimes with fog. From fall through spring, Pacific storms bring gales, rain and big westerly swell. Bright days between fronts can show a clean horizon and long lines of swell rolling toward shore.
