What you are looking at
Buoy 46027 floats just 8 nautical miles northwest of Crescent City, near California's border with Oregon, in about 60 meters (roughly 197 feet) of water. It takes its name from St. George Reef, the cluster of rocks offshore that is home to a famous historic lighthouse. Being this close in, the coast may show in some frames of the camera's hourly daylight photo strip, though weather often hides it.
Crescent City's commercial fleet, especially its Dungeness crab boats, plus mariners rounding the reef and surfers on the north coast, all rely on what this buoy reports. The National Data Buoy Center maintains the 3-meter discus buoy, which measures wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period for National Weather Service forecasts.
This rainy corner of the coast sees winter storms can roll in one after another with gales, rain and heavy seas. Summer is milder, with frequent fog and brisk northwest winds. Clear days show green water near shore and lines of swell marching in.
