What you are looking at
Station 46029 sits 20 nautical miles west of the mouth of the Columbia River, the border between Oregon and Washington, in about 135 meters (roughly 443 feet) of water. The coast is far enough away that it may or may not appear in the camera's strip of photos, generally taken hourly during daylight.
The Columbia River Bar, where the river's powerful outflow meets Pacific swell, is notorious among mariners and has long been called the Graveyard of the Pacific. Bar pilots guiding ships into the river, Coast Guard crews, commercial and charter fishers, and anyone planning to cross the bar watch this 2.1-meter foam buoy closely. Maintained by the National Data Buoy Center, it reports wind and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, which feed National Weather Service marine forecasts and bar warnings.
Winter storms bring gales, driving rain and towering swell, and photos can look dark and wild. Summer is calmer, with northwest winds and patches of fog. When conditions are rough here, seas on the bar itself can be far worse.
