What you are looking at
Buoy 46035 floats in the central Bering Sea, 310 nautical miles north of Adak in the Aleutian Islands, over deep water about 3,696 meters (roughly 12,100 feet) down. It is one of the most remote stations in the National Data Buoy Center network, and its camera's hourly daylight photo strip shows nothing but sea and sky in every direction.
The Bering Sea supports some of the richest fisheries in the world, including the crab and pollock fleets, and those crews, along with cargo ships on routes between Asia and North America, depend on accurate forecasts. This 3-meter foam buoy reports wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, helping National Weather Service forecasters in Alaska track storms in a region with very few other observations.
From fall through winter, intense storms sweep across the Bering Sea with gale or storm-force winds, huge seas and freezing spray; winter daylight is short, so there are fewer photos. Summer is calmer but often foggy and gray, with low cloud hanging over cold water.
