What you are looking at
Station 46041, named for Cape Elizabeth on the Washington coast, floats 45 nautical miles northwest of Aberdeen, off the outer coast of the Olympic Peninsula. The water here is about 131 meters (around 430 feet) deep. The coastline may or may not be visible in the camera's photo strip, which is generally taken hourly in daylight and looks in several directions.
Fishing boats from Grays Harbor and La Push, ships moving along the coast toward the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Washington surfers all use this buoy's data. The National Data Buoy Center's 3-meter discus buoy reports wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, which feed National Weather Service marine forecasts and warnings for the Washington coast.
From October through spring, a steady series of Pacific storms brings strong southerly winds, heavy rain and large swells, so many photos show gray, foam-streaked seas. Summers are milder, with northwest breezes, clearer skies and, often, a bank of fog sitting along the coast.
