What you are looking at
Station 46047 floats near Tanner Bank, 121 nautical miles west of San Diego, in the outer waters of the Southern California Bight. Tanner Bank is an undersea rise in an otherwise deep part of the bight; the buoy itself is anchored in about 1,390 meters (roughly 4,560 feet) of water. No land is visible from here, so the camera's hourly daylight photo strip shows open ocean in several directions.
Because it sits well offshore, this buoy catches incoming swell before it reaches the islands and mainland, making it a favorite of surf forecasters. Long-range sport fishing boats from San Diego, the Navy, commercial ships and National Weather Service forecasters also watch it. The National Data Buoy Center's 3-meter foam buoy reports wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period.
Winter brings the biggest northwest swells, driven by distant North Pacific storms, along with occasional rain and wind. Spring is often breezy, and summer brings steadier conditions, a marine layer that can hang low over the water, and south swells from the Southern Hemisphere.
