What you are looking at
Station 46050 sits on Stonewall Bank, about 20 nautical miles west of Newport, Oregon, in roughly 149 meters (about 490 feet) of water. It is a 3-meter foam buoy owned and maintained by the National Data Buoy Center, and its BuoyCAM takes a wide strip of photos looking in several directions, generally about once an hour in daylight.
Stonewall Bank is a rocky rise on the continental shelf, and the waters around it are well known to the charter boats and commercial fishermen who run out of Yaquina Bay. Before they cross the bar at Newport, many check this buoy for wave height and period, wind speed and gusts, and air pressure. The same readings feed National Weather Service marine forecasts for the central Oregon coast.
Expect mostly open sea and sky in the pictures; the coast may or may not show on the clearest days. Winter brings long Pacific storm swells, low cloud and rain squalls, while summer often means steady northwest winds, whitecaps and banks of coastal fog. Because the buoy rides the waves, the horizon tilts from frame to frame, and spray can blur a lens.
