What you are looking at

Station 46060, West Orca Bay, lies about 8 nautical miles northwest of Hinchinbrook Island in the eastern part of Prince William Sound, Alaska. The water below this 3-meter foam buoy is about 430 meters (around 1,400 feet) deep. Orca Bay leads toward the fishing town of Cordova, and Hinchinbrook Entrance, the main passage between the sound and the open Gulf of Alaska, is close by.

That location makes the buoy useful to many people at once: gillnetters and seiners working out of Cordova, tankers moving between the Valdez terminal and the Gulf, and the pilots, escorts and forecasters who look after them. It reports wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, and the data help shape National Weather Service marine forecasts for the sound.

Its daylight photo strip, generally taken about hourly, looks out over gray-green water; mountains and islands of the sound may or may not appear depending on cloud and the direction of each frame. Winter days are short, so photos are fewer, and gales off the Gulf can bring snow and steep chop. Long summer days give many pictures, often with low cloud and drizzle.
