What you are looking at

Out in the deep North Pacific, about 310 nautical miles south-southwest of Kodiak, Alaska, station 46066 rides above water some 4,459 meters (about 14,600 feet) deep. The National Data Buoy Center owns and maintains this 3-meter discus buoy, which sits well south of the Alaska Peninsula and far from any land.

Storms that grow along the Aleutian Low often track across this part of the ocean on their way into the Gulf of Alaska, so readings here give forecasters an early look at falling pressure, rising winds and building seas. The buoy measures wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period. Ships on the great-circle routes between North America and Asia, and fishing vessels heading to and from Alaska, rely on the forecasts these numbers support.

The BuoyCAM shows open sea and sky only, in a wide strip of photos taken generally about hourly in daylight. Winter can bring towering gray seas, driving rain and very short days; summer is milder but often wrapped in low cloud and fog. Expect a tilted horizon and, at times, spray across a lens.
