What you are looking at
Station 46069 is anchored about 14 nautical miles southwest of Santa Rosa Island, one of California's Channel Islands, in roughly 985 meters (about 3,200 feet) of water. It is a 3-meter foam buoy run by the National Data Buoy Center, placed where the open Pacific meets the waters south of the northern Channel Islands.
This spot helps forecasters see the wind and swell coming down the coast from Point Conception before it reaches the Santa Barbara and Ventura area and the outer waters off Southern California. Boaters crossing to the islands, commercial fishermen and ships approaching the Los Angeles area all benefit from its readings of wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, which feed National Weather Service marine forecasts.
The camera takes a strip of photos in several directions, generally about hourly during daylight. Mostly you will see sea and sky; the island may or may not show on a clear day. Spring and early summer often bring strong northwest winds and whitecaps, summer can bring a marine layer, and winter storms send larger swells through. The buoy's motion tilts the horizon from shot to shot.
