What you are looking at

Station 46075, Shumagin Islands, lies about 85 nautical miles south of Sand Point, Alaska, on the Pacific side of the Alaska Peninsula. It sits over deep water, about 2,731 meters (roughly 9,000 feet), beyond the Shumagin Islands and their shallow banks. The National Data Buoy Center owns and maintains this 3-meter discus buoy.

Sand Point is home to salmon, cod and other fishing fleets, and the waters south of the Shumagins see steady traffic from boats moving along the peninsula and ships bound to and from the Aleutian passes. The buoy measures wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period, giving forecasters a reading on storms coming in from the open Pacific before they reach the coast.

The BuoyCAM shows a wide strip of sea and sky, photographed in several directions, generally about hourly in daylight. Land is unlikely to appear at this distance. Winter storms riding the Aleutian Low bring heavy seas and short days, and summer often brings fog with a gentler swell. Spray or salt on a lens and a leaning horizon come with the job.
