What you are looking at
Station 46076 is named for Cape Cleare, the southern tip of Montague Island, and floats about 17 nautical miles south of the island in the northern Gulf of Alaska. The water here is about 200 meters (around 650 feet) deep, on the continental shelf. This 3-meter discus buoy is one of the National Data Buoy Center's stations guarding the approaches to Prince William Sound.
Montague Island stands between the open Gulf and the sound, and ships that use Hinchinbrook Entrance, including tankers carrying oil from Valdez, pass through the waters to the east. Seward and the Kenai Peninsula fishing fleets also work the shelf nearby. The buoy reports wind speed, gusts and direction, pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period for National Weather Service marine forecasts and warnings.
Its photo strip, generally taken about hourly in daylight, mostly shows sea and sky; the mountains of Montague Island may or may not appear when the air is clear. Winter gales in the northern Gulf can be fierce, with snow showers and short days, while summer brings long daylight, calmer seas and frequent low cloud. The horizon rocks as the buoy moves.
