What you are looking at
Station 46078 carries the name Albatross Bank, the fishing bank off southern Kodiak Island, and lies about 104 nautical miles south of Kodiak. Its recorded water depth of about 5,361 meters (some 17,600 feet) shows that it sits well past the edge of the shelf, in the deep water of the North Pacific. The station is a 3-meter discus buoy, owned and kept on station by the National Data Buoy Center.
Kodiak is one of Alaska's largest fishing ports, and boats heading out to the banks south of the island want to know what the open ocean is sending their way. On board, sensors track wind speed, gusts and direction, barometric pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and the height and period of passing waves. Its readings give National Weather Service forecasters an early sign of storms and swell approaching Kodiak and the western Gulf of Alaska.
Expect only sea and sky in the BuoyCAM strip, taken generally about hourly in daylight. In winter, gray skies, heavy swell and frequent gales are typical, with short daylight. Summer is calmer, though fog and low cloud often sit over the water. The horizon will lean as the buoy rides the waves.
