What you are looking at
Station 46080, Portlock Bank, sits about 76 nautical miles east-northeast of Kodiak, Alaska, on the shelf of the northern Gulf of Alaska. The water here is about 220 meters (roughly 720 feet) deep. It is a 3-meter discus buoy owned and maintained by the National Data Buoy Center.
Portlock Bank is a productive fishing ground, and the buoy lies along the broad stretch of water between Kodiak and the Kenai Peninsula used by vessels heading to and from Cook Inlet and Homer. Fishermen, freight and fuel barges, and forecasters all use its readings of wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period. These numbers feed National Weather Service marine forecasts for the Kodiak and Kenai waters.
The camera takes a strip of photos around the buoy, generally about hourly in daylight, showing open sea and sky; land is not likely to appear. Winter storms in the Gulf bring big seas, snow squalls and only a few hours of usable light, while summer brings long days and a gentler sea, often under a ceiling of low cloud. The view tilts as the buoy moves.
