What you are looking at
Station 46082 is named for Cape Suckling and sits about 35 nautical miles southeast of Kayak Island, Alaska, in the northern Gulf of Alaska. The water here is about 296 meters (some 970 feet) deep, on the continental shelf. NOAA's National Data Buoy Center maintains this 3-meter discus buoy in a stretch of coast where weather stations are few and far between.
Behind this coastline rise the Chugach and St. Elias Mountains, and the meeting of Gulf storms with that steep terrain can produce strong, gusty winds along the shore. Fishing boats working between Cordova and Yakutat, and vessels crossing the northern Gulf, use the buoy's readings of wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period. Those observations feed National Weather Service forecasts and warnings.
The BuoyCAM's daylight strip, generally taken about hourly, mainly shows open sea and sky; distant peaks may or may not show on rare clear days. Expect frequent gales, heavy seas and short days in winter, and long, often cloudy days with lighter winds in summer. Spray on a lens and a tilting horizon are normal out here.
