What you are looking at

Station 46085 sits in the central Gulf of Alaska, about 265 nautical miles west of Cape Ommaney, the southern tip of Baranof Island. The ocean here is about 3,749 meters (roughly 12,300 feet) deep, and there is no land anywhere in view. The National Data Buoy Center keeps this 3-meter foam buoy on station in one of the emptiest parts of the North Pacific.

Many of the storms that eventually reach Southeast Alaska and British Columbia move across this area first, so its readings give forecasters an early measurement where there would otherwise be very few. The buoy reports wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period, which go into National Weather Service marine forecasts for ships crossing the Gulf and for coastal waters downstream.

The BuoyCAM looks around the buoy in a strip of photos, generally about once an hour in daylight. Winter can bring long stretches of gray sky, strong winds and large swells, with limited light; summer is gentler but often foggy. Because the buoy moves with every wave, the horizon tilts and the lenses can collect salt or spray.
