What you are looking at

Well inside the Strait of Juan de Fuca, station 46088 is anchored about 17 nautical miles northeast of Port Angeles, Washington, near New Dungeness and its long sand spit. The water here is about 115 meters (roughly 380 feet) deep. NOAA's National Data Buoy Center maintains this 3-meter discus buoy in the eastern end of the strait.

These waters connect the Pacific to Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia, so container ships, tankers, ferries between Port Angeles and Victoria, and many recreational boaters pass nearby. Winds can pick up quickly in the eastern strait, and the buoy's readings of wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period help the National Weather Service warn small craft and larger vessels alike.

In the daylight photo strip, generally taken about hourly, land such as the Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island or the San Juan Islands may appear in some frames when the air is clear. Summer afternoons often bring brisk westerly winds and sometimes fog, while winter brings gray skies, rain and gusty storm winds. The buoy moves with the chop, so the horizon tilts.
